Les marchés de Provence

Years ago, Paris was notorious for shutting down during the month of August. Parisians left town and went to the beach or the country.

Being American, I thought that I couldn't just close my business for a month so I got the idea to try selling at the outdoor markets in Provence. For three summers in a row (1991 to 1993), I packed up my merchandise and headed south.

The markets took place in a different town every day. The regular vendors had their reserved spaces where they would set up each week. But people like me, who were there only for the season, had to be allotted a spot from whatever space was left over. The official who allotted the spots was called a placier.

At the crack of dawn, you had to be in the center of town waiting for the placier. Then you had to rush behind him, pleading your case, as he raced through the market looking for available spots. The worst spot for someone like me, who sold fine crafts, was next to the fruit and vegetables.

It was hard work setting up and tearing down my little stand, lugging the merchandise and standing out in the blazing sun until lunchtime. But whether you're a vendor or a shopper, the outdoor markets anywhere in France are always lively and colorful and fun! And an integral part of the French way of life.

In 1992 my parents joined me in Provence.

My dad loved doing the markets!

In 1993 my friends Adrienne and Doug and their daughter Eve joined me.

Me being bossy, as usual!
